FACT:
In America, dogs and cats are companions. Not only that, they are seen as a person's beloved child. This leads Americans to spend thousands on their pet in vet bills, accessories, sometimes even clothes. Because of this, Americans as well as a few other countries have the exact same revulsion to eating a dog or cat as they would at eating a human baby. Because we're raised to associate with pet = child, it's an instinctual reflex.
In China and other countries where the culture is vastly different, cats and dogs are not seen on this level. They're instead associated with pigs, chickens, cows, or sometimes horses. Occasionally companions, but more often working animals at best, food at worst. This means that these cultures have none of the instinctual revulsion at eating these animals that Americans do, because they're not seen as fuzzy miniature non-talking humans.
